Patients with Macular Degeneration are at a much higher risk of COVID-19 complications

A recent study‭ ‬“Immune Complement and Coagulation Dysfunction in Adverse Outcomes of SARS-CoV-2‭ ‬Infection”‭ ‬by Vijendra Ramlall‭, ‬Phyllis M. Thangaraj and ‬Sagi D‭. ‬Shapira, indicates that macular degeneration patients are at a much higher risk of COVID-19 complications. This is because AMD patients are known to have hyperactive complement activity.

Therefore, patients with early dry macular degeneration should avoid non-urgent doctor visits and maintain Home Monitoring with the C.A.S.A Vision/Amsler grid self-testers.

Patients that require anti-VEGF injections for wet macular degeneration or experience sudden changes in vision with dry macular degeneration should see their doctors like usual and should always maintain Home Monitoring with the C.A.S.A Vision Screeners/Amsler grid self-testers.

C.A.S.A. Vision Screeners

As a diagnostic tool, the C.A.S.A. Vision Screener enables patients and specialists to identify the condition. It is a self-testing, tri-colored eye chart designed to detect changes in the vision. The test is based on the chromatic aberration of the eye, whereby green, red and yellow light are refracted differently in the eye.
